Oumare Tounkara's first-half strike gave Oldham victory and ended Huddersfield's four-match unbeaten run.
The on-loan striker latched on to a long ball and beat Ian Bennett with his second effort after the goalkeeper had blocked his initial shot.
Huddersfield had almost taken the lead when Graham Carey found himself free in the area, but the midfielder shot wide.
The visitors embarked on a sustained push for an equaliser late in the game, but the Latics held on.
Oldham player-manager Paul Dickov told BBC Radio Manchester: "I think some of the chances we created was possible the best we've played all season.
"Everytime we've had a little bit of a blip we've bounced back they've got great character amongst them and was delighted with the today.
"We believe when we play on the front foot like we did today we're a match for anybody."
Huddersfield Town manager Lee Clark told BBC Radio Leeds: "Oldham deserved to be 1-0 at half time, possibly more. I think my goalkeeper has saved it from being a wider margin at half-time.
"The 10 outfield players never got going at all. We lost all of our individual battles, so when you lose 10 out of 10, you're going to be up against it.
"We had to try and do the same to Oldham in the second half what they did to us, but when we had the chance to play we didn't show any positivity."
