Moments later the Terriers took a deserved lead through Carey's free-kick as their assurance grew.
Joey Gudjonsson then broke up a Wednesday attack and set up a devastating counter involving Rhodes and Garner which resulted in Pilkington's impressive finish.
Wednesday were struggling to secure a foothold in the game and Rhodes should have have made it 3-0 just before half-time but shot just wide.
The introduction of Clinton Morrison and James O'Connor brought an improvement in the Owls' performance after the interval but they struggled to create chances.
Their best moment arrived when Morrison's neat lay-off found Neil Mellor but the former Liverpool striker fired over.
Sheffield Wednesday manager Alan Irvine told BBC Radio Sheffield: "I'm bitterly disappointed. We were very poor in the first half, got a bit better in the second half but we weren't good enough.
"We try and do our preparation as thoroughly as we can. We spoke about this being a derby, I don't know what else we can do to make the players aware.
"There have been a lot of questions asked of the players. We work hard to try and make everything is covered. The players train well, yet we come onto the pitch and forget the things we've worked on."
Huddersfield Town manager Lee Clark told BBC Radio Leeds: "I'm a football fan myself so I appreciate when you get turn-outs like we do and the support we get week in, week out.
"For us to put a performance in like that, a complete performance in terms of the quality of our play with and without the ball, I just think it's done the travelling fans proud.
"We've done nothing yet, I'm not getting excited but I just wanted to show my appreciation to them for their fantastic and continued support."
