Sheffield Wednesday survived an early scare to see off the challenge of a spirited Yeovil.
Gary Teale wasted a great chance for the home side after 10 minutes when he side footed over the bar.
The Owls brought on Jermaine Johnson and were duly rewarded when he cracked in an unstoppable effort.
Tommy Miller sealed the result from the spot after Luke Ayling felled Jon Otsemobor, who was himself sent off late on for a foul on Nathan Smith.
Yeovil manager Terry Skiverton told BBC Somerset: "It was 60/40 possession, I think we had double the chances, double the corners and it just shows you what they had to bring on in Jermaine Johnson.
"I feel there should have been a sending off for a stamping [Darren Purse on Gavin Williams], for me there's turning points in games and that was massive.
"On the positive I thought the performance was magnificent, I thought we more than matched them but we've got to take our chances."
Sheffield Wednesday manager Alan Irvine told BBC Radio Sheffield: "I thought we started very well. Our play in the first 20 minutes was excellent.
"We had to change our system and we did. Once things settled, I felt we started to regain control again.
"I made the changes and the the changes on this occasion proved to be successful."
