Sheffield Wednesday ended a five-match winless streak against a Notts County side who finished with 10 men.
The Magpies had enjoyed the better of the chances but Marcus Tudgay put the visitors ahead with a 25-yard effort.
Lee Hughes' header was ruled out for offside and Notts' hopes suffered a further setback when Alan Judge was dismissed for kicking Darren Potter.
It was Potter who made sure of the points when he finished off a slick move deep into injury time.
Notts County manager Craig Short told BBC Radio Nottingham: "We started so well and you have to capitalise when you get a start like that.
"Some of our play was outstanding in the first half and we were moving the ball quickly.
"We came out the second half sloppy, but it's a sign of how far the club has come that we felt we should win this game."
Sheffield Wednesday manager Alan Irvine told BBC Radio Sheffield: "I'm delighted obviously. I feel a lot better then I have over a number of weeks.
"I felt that after 25 minutes, we started to get a grip of the game. In the second half we were very good.
"It certainly tells you that we're able to bounce back."
