Romain Vincelot's header earned Dagenham & Redbridge a well-deserved point with unbeaten Colchester.
Bas Savage tapped in from two yards to give the visitors the lead, but the hosts levelled when Ashley Vincent headed home Andrew Bond's cross.
Colchester improved after the break and went in front through David Mooney's precise curling effort.
However, Vincelot bravely headed in Danny Green's cross to ensure that the points were shared.
Colchester United manager John Ward told BBC Essex: "It was a typical local derby, Dagenham have played well against us and we missed an opportunity in the first half.
"We are okay and we remain unbeaten and we'll have a few more games like this.
"Dagenham played very well and I'm sure John (Still) is very happy with his side's performance.
