Lee Barnard's second-half strike handed Southampton victory as Sheffield Wednesday slumped to their fourth defeat in a row.
Rickie Lambert ran at the Wednesday defence before sliding in his strike partner Barnard to slot in the winner.
The two combined time and again, but home keeper Nicky Weaver was on hand to keep the Owls in the game.
Clinton Morrison had a chance to deny Nigel Adkins his first win as Saints boss, but his defence stood firm.
Southampton manager Nigel Adkins told BBC Radio Solent:
"We're very pleased, very proud, lots of smiles all round.
"We've created some very good opportunities.
"The big thing for me is that the players have played for the team"
Sheffield Wednesday manager Alan Irvine told BBC Radio Sheffield: "It was a game where I felt we were very comfortable. I didn't think we were going to score plenty of goals but I felt in control of the game.
"We gave away a awful goal from having very good possession.
"What you need is good strong characters when things are going well."
