Brighton moved to just outside the play-off places on goal difference after overcoming MK Dons.
Kazenga LuaLua notched his first goal for the Seagulls with a fierce 25-yard free kick that went through the hands of Dons keeper David Martin.
The on-loan Newcastle man then sent over a perfect cross for a grateful Glenn Murray to head home number two.
Jermaine Easter came closest for the visitors but was thwarted by keeper Casper Ankergen as the Dons toiled.
Brighton manager Gus Poyet told BBC Sussex: "It's important sometimes to talk about the players because you know they are special. Everyone here was waiting for Kazenga LuaLua to arrive because we know what he gives.
"He was desperate to score a goal. I don't know if he'll score a better one.
"I think it was our best team performance overall as a group. We defended well and knew we had special players up front who could score goals."
MK Dons manager Karl Robinson told BBC Three Counties Radio: "I would question the way their two centre-halves played against our forwards. It was at times almost bordering on assault. Some of the tackles they put in were pretty poor.
"It was probably a good game for the neutrals, but not for us, but you have to accept that sometimes.
"They didn't create many chances, and we didn't create enough either for all the attacking talent we have got on show."
