Brentford climbed off the bottom of League One after Charlie MacDonald's first-half strike secured victory over leaders Sheffield Wednesday.
Robbie Simpson had seen a header saved by Wednesday keeper Nicky Weaver before MacDonald fired the Bees ahead with a low shot on the turn.
The Owls improved after the break and Ben Hamer saved Marcus Tudgay's shot.
But Brentford remained a threat as Simpson hit the bar and Weaver produced a stunning save to deny Nicky Adams.
Simpson also had an effort cleared off the line by Mark Beevers as Wednesday's unbeaten start to their league campaign came to an end.
