Paul Thirlwell struck a stoppage time equaliser to earn early League One leaders Carlisle a point at Colchester.
Thirlwell swept home from close range after Gary Madine had fired the ball into a crowded penalty area.
Colchester had looked to be going top themselves after on-loan striker David Mooney headed in Brian Wilson's cross.
Anthony Wordsworth was also denied by visiting keeper Adam Collin, but Carlisle improved after the break and hit the bar through Francoise Zoko.
That acrobatic effort followed a chance for Madine, but U's keeper Mark Cousins pulled off a fine one-handed stop.
Colchester United manager John Ward told BBC Essex: "I'm disappointed for the team, but I can't really deny them their equalizer.
"We've ridden our luck a bit and I was hoping we'd be able to ride it all the way through, but we didn't.
"I'm sure even the most partisan Colchester supporter, including me, can't really deny Carlisle taking a point back with them."
