Sheffield Wednesday substitute Neil Mellor grabbed a superb late goal to earn a point against Colchester.
Mellor showed great composure to control the ball on his chest, wriggle away from two defenders and shoot home.
Clinton Morrison twice went close to giving the Owls the lead, hitting the post and shooting just wide while David Mooney also hit the post for the U's.
Colchester took the lead when Andy Bond marked his home debut with a stunning 20-yard strike just after the break.
Bond profited from some sloppy midfield play by the Owls to put the U's ahead and the home side could have extended their lead but for David Mooney missing two good chances.
The on-loan striker, who scored twice in the midweek Carling Cup win over Hereford, hit his first shot wastefully wide from close range after great work by David Perkins.
But he was unlucky with his second effort in the space of two minutes, blasting a fine 18-yard shot against the post.
The Owls had the better opportunities in a tight match before then, Morrison hitting the post and seeing the ball scrambled off the line and also hooking a shot wide from close range.
But Bond's goal gave Colchester confidence and they seemed set to take the points until Mellor intervened with seven minutes remaining.
Colchester United manager John Ward told BBC Essex: "In there I have the same feelings as last Saturday at Exeter, where we have been ahead and not come away with the win.
"But watching my team play, against one of the favourites to get back out of this division, I think I've been really, really pleased with a lot of things I've seen.
"We are on the right track, we just have to toughen it up and win."
