Swindon equalised in injury time to keep their hopes of automatic promotion alive and deny Exeter a valuable win.
James Dunne opened the scoring for the visitors, slotting home in style after a fine pull back from Ryan Taylor.
Swindon were dominant throughout but wasted several chances, with Billy Paynter hitting the bar before a fine Paul Jones save denied the same player.
But with seconds to play, a cross from Jon-Paul McGovern was chested into his own net by Exeter skipper Matt Taylor.
Swindon manager Danny Wilson told BBC Radio Wiltshire: "Credit to the boys, they kept going and they got an equaliser which was fully deserved on the second-half performance.
"If you put the ball into certain areas you have half a chance. Thankfully we got our just deserts.
"All we can do is keep the pressure on the teams up there. We don't want to let this chance just drift away and we want to give it a really good shot at second place."
Exeter City manager Paul Tisdale told BBC Radio Devon:
"I suppose it was inevitable that eventually they would score with that much pressure, but we've got a very valuable point away from home. We need every point so I'm not going to start getting greedy, it was a big performance and very close.
"I'm very proud of the team, and great credit to the supporters and the management team, it was a real big effort from the players.
"We still have momentum. A point away against one of the top teams in the league, yeah, that's not bad. But until we're safe, I certainly won't relax.
