Darren Byfield's fine goal saw Walsall come from behind to keep Tranmere in the League One relegation zone.
Byfield's dazzling run took him past two defenders before he finished with a clinical shot past Luke Daniels.
Tranmere took the lead when a low cross from Gareth Edds was deflected past his own keeper by defender Manny Smith.
Smith made amends when he sent a downward header just inside the far post for his third goal of the season before Byfield's 70th minute strike.
Tranmere manager Les Parry told BBC Radio Merseyside:
"I think for the first half hour, that's as good [sic] as we've played away from home for quite a long time.
"When the game started the players didn't feel the pressure, but then when we concede a goal maybe they started to panic a little bit.
"But in the second half we regrouped and I felt we more than held our own."
