Oldham eased their relegation worries with victory over 10-man Stockport to make it four games without defeat.
The match hinged on a first-half clash when Stockport's Danny Swailes received a straight red for hauling down Oldham debutant Lewis Guy in the box.
Pawel Abbott rammed home the spot-kick for his 11th goal of the season.
Chris Taylor and Reuben Hazell both came close to making it 2-0 to Oldham, before Stockport's David Poole fired a shot inches wide late on.
