Brighton earned a valuable point in their survival fight but could have had more at promotion-chasing Colchester.
Glenn Murray, who had penalty appeals turned down in either half, should have put Gus Poyet's side in front early on but the striker headed wide.
John Joe O'Toole went close for the hosts before Murray fluffed another chance after the restart.
Albion's Adam El-Abd nodded wide from close range as Aidy Boothroyd's fourth-placed side hung on for the draw.
Colchester manager Aidy Boothroyd told BBC Essex: "The important thing is that when you play as bad as as that you keep clean sheets and we have a good habit of doing that.
"Overall I'm disappointed that we got the draw, but we didn't deserve anything other than that.
"Brighton maybe feel a bit disappointed that they go away with just a point."
Brighton boss Gus Poyet told BBC Sussex: "I don't think it was the kind of game where you really, really deserve the three points. The result is quite fair.
"I think the side believe in themselves. The four defenders also did well.
"They took good decisions and the keeper is helping us a lot especially in games like today."
