Kyel Reid struck in added time to earn Charlton a win over 10-man Southend.
After Jean-Francois Christophe was sent off for violent conduct, Southend took the lead when Matt Paterson's long-range shot squirmed under the keeper.
Simon Francis and Adam Barrett cleared efforts off the line before Akpo Sodje finally poked home Charlton's leveller.
After a Francis free-kick hit the bar and the follow-up was cleared off the line, Reid ran on to a ball over the top and fired in a low shot to win it.
Southend United manager Steve Tilson told BBC Essex:
"We were down to 10 men for such a long time they were always going to get chances.
"But to concede again in the injury time was a bitter blow.
"The lads have given everything again tonight and you just can't fault them."
