Pawel Abbott headed home Dale Stephens' cross to give Oldham a valuable win over fellow strugglers Tranmere.
Oldham enjoyed the better of the first half and Dean Furman saw a deflected shot well saved by Luke Daniels.
Abbott saw one shot blocked and another deflected for a corner before eventually opening the scoring.
Daniels denied Danny Whittaker a second Oldham goal with a finger-tip save before Chris Shuker, looking for an equaliser, saw his header easily saved.
Tranmere manager Les Parry told BBC Radio Merseyside:
"We had such a good performance last week and it's well noted in football after good performances it's always difficult to maintain it.
"But our record against Oldham isn't great and I just had a gut feeling we were going to have a difficult afternoon."
