Leading scorer Simeon Jackson missed a host of chances on his 100th Gillingham appearance as Walsall earned a point.
On-loan signing Rene Howe created the openings for the Canadian, who has netted 11 league goals this season, but he failed to convert his opportunities.
Walsall's Clayton McDonald saw a header from a corner saved by Alan Julian.
But Gillingham dominated and Jack Payne, Andy Barcham and Howe all missed chances before Jamie Vincent cleared off the line from Mark Bentley.
Gillingham manager Mark Stimson told BBC Radio Kent:
"We deserved three points today. Bad finishing or good defending, people can make their mind up on that.
"We've nearly done everything, the only thing we haven't got is that goal.
"Last week we got a 0-0 with Colchester and I was very happy with that, but today I am disappointed."
