Andrew Crofts scored in stoppage time to deny bottom club Stockport a first league win since October.
Stockport had the better of a tight first half and took the lead early in the second when Danny Pilkington curled a shot home from 25 yards.
But Brighton grabbed a vital point when Crofts' shot from 20 yards struck a divot and bounced over Owain fon Williams and into the net.
Brighton almost nicked a late winner but Nicky Forster wasted the chance.
Brighton and Hove Albion manager Gus Poyet told BBC Sussex:
"I think we are a different team when we are chasing the game. I think we bring something extra in terms of our mentality.
I would like to find that from the beginning as well. It's true that every time we are in a bad situation we gave it that extra bit and I think that's important for the whole team."
