Gillingham were denied their first win on the road this season when a late goal from defender Neil Austin gave Hartlepool a valuable point.
The Gills almost led when Simeon Jackson pushed the ball wide in a one-on-one with keeper Scott Flinders.
Joe Gamble and Antony Sweeney then went close to putting Hartlepool ahead.
Finally, Rene Howe's cross was headed in by Jackson, but Austin was given too much space and time to bounce a low shot past Gills goalkeeper Alan Julian.
