Charlton kept up the pressure on leaders Leeds with their first away win in nine games.

James Tunnicliffe hit the crossbar for Brighton before Deon Burton headed home a Nicky Bailey free-kick against the run of play.

Scott Wagstaffe doubled the visitors' lead minutes later, converting Grant Basey's cut-back from six yards.

Seagulls keeper Graeme Smith kept the score down when he pulled off a superb double save to deny Dave Mooney.

Brighton and Hove Albion manager Gus Poyet told BBC Sussex:

"I don't think there was a two-goal difference between the teams. You know when you are in this situation sometimes it doesn't work your way.

"Great effort, good understanding, and I think we controlled the game. It's nothing to complain about."
