Gillingham missed out on the chance to leapfrog Carlisle in the League One table as Greg Abbott's men held out to claim a point.
The highlight of a forgettable first half came when Andy Barcham tested Carlisle keeper Adam Collin.
Gillingham's top scorer Simeon Jackson was also denied by Collin, and with a draw looming the Canadian screwed wide from six yards.
Ian Harte almost claimed the points for the Cumbrians with a late free-kick.
Gillingham manager Mark Stimson told BBC Radio Kent:
"We were the team looking to get the goal and came really close on a couple of occasions. We didn't have that little bit of luck.
"We got a point but we would have liked three because I think we deserved that."
