Simeon Jackson was once again the hero for Gillingham as his late equaliser earned a share of the points.
A lively Izale McLeod had an early penalty appeal waved away and later blazed wide as Charlton pressed.
And the Addicks took the lead when Gills left-back John Nutter sliced a clearance from an innocuous Therry Racon cross into his own goal.
But Jackson equalised three minutes later with a good finish from six yards out after a Mark Bentley flick-on.
Gillingham defender John Nutter told BBC Radio Kent:
"I've just given Jacko a big kiss in the changing room, he's dug me out of a hole there. Hopefully I can do that for the others.
"The boys showed great character and it gives us confidence for next week now.
"We've got to take a draw, we'll take the positives and we should have won the game."
Charlton manager Phil Parkinson told BBC London 94.9:
"Very difficult conditions obviously, the pitch was poor, it was very difficult to play on it, swirly wind and, in those conditions, you've got to roll your sleeves up and compete and make sure you come away with a result. That's what we did.
"Obviously going a goal up you want to take all three points but today we'll get back on that coach with a point and it was the type of grinding performance where we had to show character."
