League One top scorer Lee Barnard took his league tally to 10 goals as Southend beat Bristol Rovers.
Barnard fired his first into the bottom corner and bagged his second from close range after Alan McCormack's cross.
Rovers pulled a goal back when Anthony Grant put Wright's cross through his own net under pressure from Kuffour.
The visitors piled on the pressure and Chris Dickson missed three good chances while Steve Mildenhall saved from Darryl Duffy - but Southend held on.
Southend United manager Steve Tilson told BBC Essex:
"The lads put a big shift in today and it was a fantastic result for us.
"It was a good first-half, we played some good stuff and like I say, the lads worked hard today.
"I think with the group of lads we've got, we're going to have to work hard every minute of every game to hopefully get results."
Bristol Rovers manager Paul Trollope told BBC Radio Bristol:
"There seemed to be a switch that flicked when we were 2-0 down. The urgency came, the intensity came but we missed the chances to get the equaliser."
"We made a lot of bad decisions with the ball. We were over-elaborating. I think we were trying to be too clever at times in the opening spell."
