Two second half goals from Lee Barnard saw Southend beat lowly Stockport, who were also reduced to 10 men.
Southend almost took the lead before half-time when defender Simon Francis hit the post with a 20-yard free-kick.
The visitors went ahead after the break when Paul Huntington hauled down Barnard and was sent-off with the striker scoring from the penalty.
Late on George Friend volleyed against the post before Barnard sealed it after his initial shot came back off the bar.
Southend United manager, Steve Tilson, told BBC Essex:
"It was a tough game as they were unbeaten in their last four games, and we haven't been on a fantastic run ourselves so it was always going to be a tough game.
"The lads did ever so well today, obviously their sending-off and Lee Barnard's penalty helped us. It was a sending-off as he was the last man."
