Colchester striker Kayode Odejayi scored a third goal in two matches to help his side beat Huddersfield.
The visitors were reduced to 10 men after Peter Clarke was sent off for a second booking after 77 minutes.
And, shortly afterwards, Odejayi tapped in a low cross by Kevin Lisbie, who had got the better of left-back Joe Skarz.
Robbie Simpson was denied by Colchester keeper Ben Williams but the home side held on to go a sixth league match unbeaten under boss Aidy Boothroyd.
Colchester United manager Aidy Boothroyd told BBC Essex:
"Huddersfield came to spoil, they played with a back five and tried to counterattack, which we expect. We overcame it and it wasn't a particularly good spectacle.
"We dealt with the weather better and came out on top, but it was a tight game and could have gone either way."
Huddersfield Town manager Lee Clark told BBC Radio Leeds:
"We certainly deserved something from this game and anyone who says different was not watching the same game.
"The players did well and struck to the game play to the letter.
"There were some very good personal performances, but one error cost us a goal and the sending off hurt us.
"But I've told the players they have nothing to be ashamed in that performance."
