Pawel Abbott kept a cool head to slot home a late penalty which gave Oldham victory at Southend.
Shrimpers defender George Friend brought down Kiegan Parker to give Abbott the chance to send Steve Mildenhall the wrong way from the spot.
In a game of few chances Parker had a goal ruled out for offside and Friend's strike was chalked off for a foul.
Substitute Francis Laurent blew Southend's best chance of an equaliser, firing wide from close range.
Southend United assistant manager Paul Brush told BBC Essex: "I'm very disappointed with the result, but also we didn't play anywhere near as well as we can.
"We didn't play with any tempo, or quality, we didn't pass the ball well enough.
"When you end up hitting it long and high when not too many of our team head the ball, we're putting ourselves on the back foot."
