Ten-man Brighton had former Rovers goalkeeper Michel Kuipers to thank as his brilliant late save secured a battling point at high-flying Rovers.
Visiting skipper Adam Virgo was sent off for a second booking on 44 minutes but they took the lead after the break with James Tunnicliffe's power header.
Jo Kuffour equalised with a low shot after substitute Andy Williams' cross.
With four minutes left, Darryl Duffy looked certain to score as he raced through, but Kuipers made a fine stop.
Brighton boss Russell Slade told BBC Sussex:
"I like my sides to be resilient and certainly when we lost a player just before half-time, Adam Virgo, then we had to be disciplined.
"We had to do things right at the back and we did, the two centre-halves were terrific.
"We should have had a penalty in the 92nd minute but he wasn't brave enough to give that today."
Bristol Rovers manager Paul Trollope told BBC Radio Bristol:
"We thought we deserved the three points, unfortunately a poor spell probably fifteen minutes after half time in which their goal occurred, then followed by some unlucky/poor finishing in the second cost us.
"The players showed a good character, I think the subs made an impact as well to turn it round, and got a well worked goal. We had the chances that normally win you football matches but it didn't today"
"It was Chris Dickson's game at Brentford on his debut and it was probably Andy Williams' who came on and was the highlight.
"Everyone knows their worth in the squad and everyone will be used so when they get the opportunities like the subs did today it's good to see them taken."
