Leeds dropped their first points of the season after a stalemate at Southend.
But the League One leaders, who had begun the season with an eight-game winning streak, had Shane Higgs to thank for earning them a point.
The keeper saved Lee Barnard's 66th-minute penalty after the Southend striker was fouled by Leigh Bromby.
Leeds enjoyed the better chances early on but Jermaine Beckford, Robert Snodgrass and Patrick Kisnorbo were all off target with their efforts.
Southend United manager Steve Tilson told BBC Essex:
"It was a very good performance. I asked them for desire and commitment before the game.
"I think they showed that in abundance and truthfully we should have won the game.
"We had better chances than they did and I just feel we should have got all three points."
