Jermaine Beckford netted the winner as Leeds maintained their 100% record with victory at Colchester.
Leeds took the lead two minutes after the break when Bradley Johnson headed in Robert Snodgrass' free-kick.
Kevin Lisbie equalised from the penalty spot after he had won the kick himself when he was tugged by Rui Marques.
But Beckford struck the decisive goal for Leeds when he converted from six yards after Alan Maybury's defensive header had fallen short.
Colchester United caretaker manager Joe Dunne:
"I thought when we got it back to 1-1 that we could hold it and maybe try to nick something.
"The game lacked quality - from both sides.
"We're still furious about the decision by the referee that led to the first goal. If it was handball, the referee never told us."
