A second-half penalty by veteran striker Marcus Stewart handed Exeter their first league win of the season as they beat Carlisle.
Stewart scored the only goal 17 minutes from time when he was tripped by Lenny Pidgeley and then dinked the resulting spot-kick over the goalkeeper.
Carlisle went close when Danny Livesey headed narrowly wide from Ian Harte's free-kick.
Liam Sercombe then cleared another Livesey header off the line.
Exeter City manager Paul Tisdale told BBC Radio Devon:
"When you look at the last four games we've had I think we've deserved at least one win out of the four and it happened to be today.
"We put a lot of effort in and we just wanted our first league win of the season and getting a clean sheet makes it somewhat sweeter.
"We were happy not to have the ball and defend, knowing we needed one or two opportunities to catch them on a break and that's how we got in."
