Jeff Hughes' late penalty gave Bristol Rovers their fourth win in a row against previously-unbeaten Huddersfield in a full-blooded match.
The midfielder scored with his left foot in the 84th minute after Terriers defender Andy Butler handled.
Darryl Duffy missed an early penalty for Rovers, his tame shot saved by Alex Smithies, who had fouled Chris Lines.
The best chance for the Terriers fell to Theo Robinson, who was thwarted by Rovers goalkeeper Fraser Forster.
Huddersfield manager Lee Clark told BBC Radio Leeds:
"I made the wrong decision in the formation I picked for this game and I'm disappointed in myself for that and have told that players that.
"But we did not do the basics right today to get the result and put everything together and that lead to the defeat.
"Their midfield was creating lots of opportunities and ours was not at all, so if we had been 3-0 down at half-time we would not have had any complaints at all."
Bristol Rovers first team coach Paul Trollope told BBC Radio Bristol:
"It was a good win for us. We've struggled at times over the last couple of years to beat the fancied teams at home.
"I've never seen Jeff Hughes take a penalty to be fair and there were a few doubters on the bench. He tucked it away well and we just shored it up and were pleased to get the win.
"There was a real competitive edge to us and an intensity to the play and a passion which I think the supporters picked up on.
