Former Lions keeper Lenny Pidgeley kept his former club at bay as Carlisle held on for a draw at the New Den.
Gary Alexander (twice) and Neil Harris went close early on as Millwall dominated the opening exchanges.
Summer signing Steve Morrison came close to his first Millwall goal but the former Stevenage player saw his shot rebound off the post.
Carlisle loan signing Tom Taiwo wasted a good chance before Millwall's David Martin hit the top of the bar.
Milwall manager Kenny Jackett told BBC Radio London:
"We had control of the game. I didn't think Carlisle posed a real threat but we didn't do enough with the ball.
"It fell into a pattern in the second half where the game just ran away from us.
"We hit the post and the bar in the second half but we know we can perform better."
