Charlton twice cleared off the line in the last 15 minutes to preserve their one-goal lead and register an opening-day victory over visitors Wycombe.
Christian Dailly headed home Jonjo Shelvey's 21st-minute corner and Nicky Bailey found the top corner two minutes later to put the home side 2-0 up.
Chris Zebroski pulled a goal back with a header two minutes before the break.
Miguel Llera made it 3-1 from close range, before Zebroski's smartly-taken second set up an exciting finish.
Charlton Athletic manager Phil Parkinson tells BBC London 94.9:
"In the first-half, some of the football we played was out of the top drawer. But in the second-half, when they started throwing everything into the box, we had to deal with it.
"At the end of the game, I told that lads that they will have to throw their heads in for the win.
"It's always important to get the first three points on the board and we have done that today."
