Southend's slim mathematical chances of making the League One play-offs were ended by a draw with Oldham.
Latics' Kevin Maher struck the post before Deane Smalley was brought down in the box by Southend defender Peter Clarke to win a penalty.
Neil Eardley fired the penalty under keeper Steve Mildenhall but Oldham's lead lasted less then 10 minutes.
Theo Robinson set up substitute Lee Barnard to score from close range but the draw was not enough for Southend.
