Lloyd Owusu's header from Gary Borrowdale's free-kick, just before the hour proved enough for the Seagulls.

Brighton substitute Craig Davies almost capped their vital victory with five minutes remaining, only to be denied by keeper Dean Gerken.

Brighton are now three points off safety with a game in hand on Carlisle who occupy 20th place.
