Craig Mackail-Smith scored twice to help Peterborough close the gap on leaders Leicester to two points with their seventh straight victory.
Mackail-Smith opened the scoring with a low shot from Paul Coutts' cross.
Chris Taylor glanced in Neal Eardley's free-kick to level before team-mate Lewis Alessandra's goal was disallowed.
Mackail-Smith tapped in the winner after Eardley headed past his own keeper to leave Oldham boss Joe Royle without a win in four games in charge.
