Lee Barnard's fourth goal in six matches guided Southend to a narrow victory at Huddersfield and their 11th win in 14 league matches.
Barnard slotted home a penalty for the away side on the hour after Huddersfield's Tom Clarke was penalised for handling Franck Moussa's cross.
Damian Scannell and Alan McCormack both fired efforts over for Southend.
Huddersfield twice wasted chances late on as Andy Butler headed off target and substitute Andy Booth shot wide.
