Southend maintained their play-off push by beating Hartlepool, who had keeper Arran Lee-Barrett sent off early on.
Lee-Barratt saw red after bringing down Theo Robinson, and after Lee Barnard slotted the resulting penalty, Franck Moussa made it 2-0 with a low drive.
Joel Porter got one back from the spot after he was fouled, but Robinson added a third for Southend before the break.
Ritchie Jones met Andy Monkhouse's cross for Pools' second, but Southend held on for their 10th win in 13 games.
