Hereford ended a run of five defeats and gave themselves a fighting chance of beating the drop at the expense of fellow strugglers Carlisle.
Steve Guinan scored the Bulls' first, taking advantage of a defensive block to fire in an angled 15-yard shot.
They grabbed their second midway through the half with Guinan crossing for Ben Smith to slide home.
On the stroke of half-time Michael Bridges scored what was ultimately a United consolation with a 25-yard shot.

Hereford manager Graham Turner told BBC Hereford & Worcester:
"The strength of the wind caused problems for both sides but we took advantage of it to go into a 2-0 lead.
"I was disappointed to have conceded the goal just before half-time, but we knew we would be up against it in the second half.
"We might have ridden our luck on one or two occasions but we should have done better when we had the ball on the break."
