Colchester helped their own play-off hopes with a win over an Oldham side whose promotion challenge is continuing to stutter.

Clive Platt scored the eventual winner after just two minutes as he seized on defender Reuben Hazell's wayward header and fired in from 10 yards.

Hazell did partly atone when he cleared off the line from Simon Hackney.

The nearest Oldham came to equalising was through Deane Smalley but his low shot came back off the post.
