Dean Hammond's stunning injury-time free kick rescued a point for Colchester from an entertaining clash.
The midfielder curled in a superb shot from the edge of the penalty area to deny Huddersfield all three points.
The U's had taken the lead when Jim Goodwin was penalised for handball and Hammond slammed in the penalty, but Anthony Pilkington tapped in to level.
Gary Roberts then latched onto Ian Craney's pass to slam in to make it 2-1 before Hammond's late intervention.
Colchester boss Paul Lambert told BBC Essex:
"I thought we had the first half, with the strong wind and in the second half they had it.
"It was a terrific goal from Dean Hammond at the death and considering we without Jimmy Walker and Mark Yeates due to injury, I think a point was about right.
"They're a good side, they're up there and I was delighted with the way we came back."
