Junior Stanislas ended Southend's run of seven league matches without a victory with an injury-time winner against 10-man Northampton.
The 19-year-old, on loan from West Ham, saw his free-kick bounce in front of keeper Chris Dunn and into the net.
Stanislas had earlier had Southend's best chance when he beat two men but saw his shot deflect away off Dunn.
Northampton were hanging on after Abdul Osman was sent off for two yellow cards, but Stanislas had the last word.
