Hereford claimed their first away league win this season at Colchester.
The Bulls also doubled their away goals tally for the campaign at the Weston Homes Community Stadium, Colchester's sixth home defeat.
Steve Guinan fired Hereford ahead from close range in the 29th minute before Lionel Ainsworth fired home inside the area after a good build up.
Jermaine Easter halved the deficit with 20 minutes left after Johnnie Jackson's shot rebounded off Clive Platt.
Hereford manager Graham Turner told BBC Hereford and Worcester:
"You know full well that when we are 2-0 up they are going to throw everything at us and they've got some big lads in there - we had to withstand a bit of pressure.
"We did have a couple of very good opportunities to have made it 3-0 or 3-1 and that would have killed it off totally.
"Obviously, to have come to a place like this against a decent side and to come out with three points has got to give the players a lot of confidence.
