A first-half double from Steve Guinan helped Hereford record a needed 3-0 victory over fellow League One strugglers Cheltenham.
Guinan fired his first past Robins' keeper Shane Higgs from ten yards after 15 minutes and followed up with his second 10 minutes later.
At the other end, Cheltenham midfielder Scott Murray forced a save from Hereford debutant keeper Matt Murray.
Hereford's Sam Gwynne sealed the points with his first goal in the 56th minute.
Hereford midfielder Ben Smith told BBC Hereford and Worcester:
"We'll get a nose bleed being third from bottom, but it was important to keep in touch.
"Even though we have had a poor run of results lately we knew that two or three wins could totally change the picture.
"We've got Northampton at home next week which is another game that, if we are going to survive in this league, we have got to look at picking up points - preferably a win."
