Walsall bounced back from successive cup defeats with victory at Colchester.
Dwayne Mattis fired home from inside the area after 16 minutes as Walsall condemned Colchester to their sixth home defeat of the season.
Former England man Michael Ricketts headed in Chris Palmer's corner to score his eighth goal of the season in the 62nd minute.
It gave the visitors a well-earned win to push them closer to the play-off places and leave Colchester in trouble.
