Neal Eardley hit the bar before Lee Hughes's header put Oldham, a lead doubled by Chris Taylor, before a frantic start to the second half.
Headers by Andy Monkhouse and Antony Sweeney drew Pools level before Joel Porter's penalty put them ahead.
Taylor's deflected low shot put Oldham back on terms and they survived Sean Gregan's dismissal to earn a draw.
