Cheltenham 2-1 Bristol Rovers

Barry Hayles struck a double to hand new Cheltenham boss Martin Allen the perfect start against Bristol Rovers.

But it needed a solid defensive display to withstand a late rally.

Hayles bagged the opener after placing his shot beyond keeper Steve Phillips from Alex Russell's pass, and the same combination doubled the advantage.

Jo Kuffour had a header cleared off the line before Rickie Lambert pulled one back and although Rovers pressed late on, the home side held out.
