Second-half goals from Glenn Murray and Nicky Forster secured an away win for Brighton over 10-man Southend to send them to the top of League One.
Southend had been on top before Franck Moussa was sent off for a crude two-footed challenge on Adam Virgo.
Brighton took control and Murray opened the scoring, firing past keeper Steve Mildenhall from the centre of the box.
Southend hit the post before Forster added a second, sliding the ball under Mildenhall from Steve Thomson's pass.
