Nathan Tyson's 12th goal of the season kept alive Nottingham Forest's slim hopes of automatic promotion.
Tyson punished Luton for failing to clear a Chris Cohen cross when he struck from close range.
Goalkeeper Dean Brill had kept Luton in the game early on when he saved a Kris Commons shot. Sol Davis then cleared Ian Breckin's effort off the line.
Luton had their chances, with Paul Smith forced into a full-length save to stop Lewis Emanuel from levelling.
