Oldham's faint play-off hopes were dealt a blow as Hartlepool grabbed their first away win in four months. Striker Michael Mackay was the hero on 74 minutes when he got behind Oldham's defence before putting a superb lob over the top of Mark Crossley.
Oldham never seriously tested Hartlepool keeper Arran Lee-Barrett.
The warning signs were there for John Sheridan's side when Crossley had to make a superb stop to keep out a header from Joel Porter before the winner.
